Spin Dryer From Laundry Alternative

spin-dryer.jpg

A spin dryer is an appliance that can readily improve the energy efficiency in your laundry. A portable spin dryer like this one from Amazon, uses centrifugal force to dry clothes. The dryer was out of stock for a while, but it is now available again. Spin drying is much more efficient than electric tumble drying, in terms of energy use. Spin drying is also faster — it takes 2-3 minutes to get clothes to a semi-dry state. The drying can then be finished by hang drying the clothes or putting them in a tumble dryer for a few minutes. Spin drying is much gentler on clothes than tumble drying, it also removes mineral deposits and detergents, rather than baking them on. The spin dryer costs $229, which is much less than the previous spin dryer we featured, the Spin-X.

Update: I’ve been testing this spin dryer for a few months now, and it works quite well. It does make a bit of noise as it spins, but the noise is reduced if you load the dryer evenly. You have to get used to loading the dryer 2-3 times to dry a whole wash load. But many of my clothes come out of the machine practically dry – they are just a little damp to the touch.

You can buy this centrifugal clothes dryer from Amazon for $229.

  1. If anyone is interested I have the larger spin dryer from the Laundry Alternative.About a yr. old & used a few times. It works great, but at 63 I don’t have the patience to load it evenly. I didn’t have a dryer at the time soI bought it. If you want to save on electricity & have the patience for it it’s a neat appliance. I don’t want to ship it.I live in Millinocket,Me. S o for around $100.00 I’d sell it.You can email me at neronephy47@aol.com

  2. I have this, as long as I load things evenly it’s silent. If it starts to make noise, I kind of rearrange & noise is taken care of. The Laundry Alternative has also become much better. I ordered a washing unit 4 days before thanksgiving, they shipped it out w/in an hour & received it 2 days later. The spin dryer was ordered on a Sunday, I received it Wednesday!

Did you ever receive your spin dryer from Laundry-Alternative? I notice you ordered it only a couple of months ago. I emailed them on Sunday (7/5) and they responded on Monday (7/6) saying they had them in stock. The website said they were in stock, but I wanted to make sure. Since your’s is the most recent post on them, just wanted to find out if you ever received it.

  4. Please AVOID website mentioned for SPINDRYER
I have ordered above SPINDRYER, never received it, and the company has BBB rating of F and MANY complaints. Company never delieverd SPINDDYER and never refunded money. Never reply to messages and eamils. Save your $$$$ and DO NOT deal with LAUNRY-ALTERNATIVE.COM

I wish I checked BBB.org and other reviews before ordering from Laundary-alternative.com

  5. I bought one from laundry alternative, it worked for 2 months, I called the company and was told that it was too bad, no repair was possible and I was out of luck. Beware this company! Don’t waste your money.

  6. There appears to be a major misunderstanding. While new to the US market, spin dryers are not in their first stage or very loud. Spin dryers have been around for many years, it an old and reliable technology. This is a fact, not my personal opinion. Regarding noise- they are not perfectly silent, but not all that loud either. If a unit is damaged in shipping it could be loud (bent internal parts can make a loud sound when the machine is in use).

  8. I,ve been using the spin dryer (Cheaper unit). We get almost 1/2 gallon of water out of each load. I spin for about 4 mins. until just drops come out of the spout. Towels took 20 min. before I turned the dryer to cool down. Jeans took 25 min., then cool down. I hung the jeans to air. I use a power strip with a switch–just switch it off and let it slow down a bit to save the brake. Saves over 1/2 of dryer time. Just turn up the radio, the noise really isn’t that loud.

  9. I recieved similar customer service problems. However, I had ordered the item several weeks ago and just now was notified that it was out of stock. Please note that it was in stock when I purchased the item. After expressing some discomfort that I was not informed sooner, I was treated very poorly. This company needs to seriously work on its customer service. They were unprofessional on so many levels.

  10. I ordered one of these a few days ago and was only told that they were out of stock when I called to find the status of my order. I received no email about it and there was nothing on the website. On top of that, the representative I talked to was condescending and his tone didn’t give me the feeling like he was someone I was happy giving $150 to.

  11. These products seem to be on their first stage…nowhere near perfection yet. I have to agree with Frank that it is painfully loud. The design looks like a fancy trash can but I love it for some odd reason.

  12. I own one of these, and I have been using it for several months now. I agree with what has been said above. It is frighteningly, painfully loud, especially if you are not extremely careful about loading it so the clothes are balanced. I find that rather harder to do than I expected (and I think I’m unusually noise-sensitive). Even if you do manage to load it properly, you probably want to hold it in place while it spins up. However, aside from that, it really does extract rather a lot of water out of my clothes. I also haven’t had any actual problems with it.

  13. I have had it for two “laundry” days and so far I like it. Its a little small, I can get about half a regular size load in it. (Maybe 4 pair of jeans) If you load it properly it doesn’t get off balance and even when it was somewhat off balance, I only had to hold it till it got up to speed. Its pretty loud and it lacks any sort of auto shut-off. (though I have not left it on for more than 3 min)
Using this in combination with my moisture sensing dryer I have cut down on my total laundry time, even if it does require 3-6 extra minutes of my attention to use it.
If I get around to measuring the time savings I will post it.

  14. I remember my grandparents having this prior to tumble driers being popular. While it did get everything drier, it was a beast of a machine which required constant attention for use, there was certainly now ‘set it and forget it’ you had to keep hold of the machine as it became unbalanced with much of the load tending to collect on one side.

It was fun to watch as the water collected in the bucket at the end of the spout, but the noise and vibration kept me at a distance as the machine was the size of me at the time!

  15. After reading your earlier article about the Spin-X, we bought one.

I love the idea of it, I had some trouble with the actual product–the lid tends to jam shut.

I sent it back to the manufacturer, it was fixed, but within a few months had the same problems again, and the motor has since slowed to the point that it extracts only half the amount of water it did initially.

I still use it sometimes, though I find it annoying that it does not work better, perhaps this lower priced machine will be more functional.
